A MUDEM and the Museum of the Mint of Rome collaboration for Financial Education Month 2024
November 2024 (from 1st to 30th) is Financial Education Month, the annual event promoted by the Planning and Coordination Committee for financial education activities, now in its seventh edition. The running theme is 'Financial Education: today for your tomorrow', with free initiatives and events (online and at venues across Italy) to provide and consolidate the fundamental notions about insurance, social security and the management and planning of personal and family financial resources.
MUDEM and the Museum of the Mint of Rome join forces for #NovemberEdufin2024 on 6, 14 and 27 November to bring 'CashLab - Money as you've never seen it'. These three appointments will take you behind the scenes of coin and banknote production and reveal some of their history.
During the visit to the Museum of the Mint, secondary school students will discover how coins and medals are made, what differences there are between these two objects, and will get to see some finished products, the materials for coin-making and some historical machinery. Part of the itinerary will cover the history of the lira, from modern-day lira to the final issues before the euro, and will then continue with workshops, discussions and analyses, and games coordinated by MUDEM and Museum of the Mint staff.
One workshop will take students through the production process behind creating a coin and a medal, illustrating the techniques of the master engravers. After a video account of the processes currently in place at the Mint's workshops, students will be able to try their hand at direct cut engraving and wax modelling, handle minting dies and punches, and, finally, put everything into practice by 'coining' a clay medal.
A second workshop will explain the principles of finance starting from a plain banknote and take off for an engaging tour of the world featuring the animals and nature elements depicted on coins and banknotes from all continents!
