Experiential financial education - Banca d'Italia's study of the effectiveness of the Immersive Exhibition, 'The Adventure of Money'

Banca d'Italia's publication, entitled 'Experiential Financial Education. Assessing the effectiveness of a Banca d'Italia exhibition', is online. It focuses on measuring the impact of the temporary exhibition, The Adventure of Money, on the financial skills of the students who visited it from October 2023 to June 2024.

The study was presented last November at the Annual Conference of the International Federation of Finance Museums (IFFM), and administered a questionnaire to a sample of about 600 students from 19 upper secondary schools in Rome, before and after visiting the exhibition.

The evaluation of the students' answers to questions about themselves and on the main topics presented during the visit highlighted how their participation in the exhibition:

  1. produced, on average, an improvement of about one third in their financial knowledge;
  2. had a greater impact on girls.

However, no significant differences emerged based on the type of school attended or on the initial level of financial skills.

The analysis also showed that the students' acquired knowledge lasted for a while, since no significant change was recorded according to whether the final questionnaire was conducted a few days after the visit or some weeks later.
