Communicating Europe. Building Europe
The 2024 Summer School was held on 5 and 6 September, organized by the University Association for European Studies (AUSE), together with the 'PhD of national interest in European Studies' of the Università di Genova, and dedicated two days to the communication and the construction of Europe.
The meeting was held at the Collegio Emiliani in Genoa Nervi and was a time for reflecting on the role of communication, understood not only as disclosure but also as narration and the sharing of ideas and values. This is what has fuelled the debate on the construction of Europe over time, supporting and guiding the process of European integration.
Cinema, radio, pop music, institutional communication and historical archives were all discussed. The key to a common understanding of all the speeches highlighted the existence of a European culture as an integrated reality, not simply the sum of national cultures.
MUDEM took part in the discussion on the second day, in the session on 'Europe: history and memory', with a paper entitled: 'Money and Europe: history, memory and popular science in the future Bank of Italy Money Museum'.
The speech underlined that communicating Europe for a central bank means explaining, along with economic concepts and with reference to economic history, why monetary stability is important for the well-being of European citizens; this can only be fully achieved through effective and well-organized active cooperation between European countries.
With this in mind, the museum is a cultural instrument chosen to convey these (and other) ideas to the general public. For this reason, it is important to increase the accessibility of the exhibition routes as much as possible and to evaluate their didactic effectiveness using appropriate tools.
