The iconic thousand lire banknote stars in MUDEM's first virtual exhibition

The Money Museum makes its debut in the virtual world

Starting 27 March, "Le Mille Lire", MUDEM's first virtual exhibition, will be available online. With this initiative, the Museum inaugurates its digital presence, presenting an exhibition freely accessible via the web and dedicated to one of the banknotes that has most marked Italy's collective imagination. The thousand lire - iconic both for its historical significance and for its enduring presence in popular culture and singer‑songwriter traditions - becomes the focus of MUDEM's first virtual showcase.

The Museum welcomes visitors into a distinctive 3D environment inspired by some of the most beautiful and prestigious historic rooms of the Banca d'Italia's premises. Within this virtual space, visitors can enjoy an entirely new experience, navigating through five themed rooms as they would in a traditional museum - while comfortably accessing all content from a computer, smartphone or tablet.

They can explore multimedia materials, consult detailed information sheets to deepen their understanding of the various issues of the thousand lire, and retrace more than one hundred and forty years of Italian history through a banknote long regarded as a symbol of prosperity.

'Le Mille Lire' spans the history of Italy, from monetary unification to the introduction of the euro. Each banknote unveils an intricate interplay of economic‑financial, historical, artistic and social threads that will rekindle memories for the generations who once used it and offer new discoveries to younger visitors.
