Imagine your class busy arranging a special event... a surprise party for their teacher! But there's a catch: they must stick to the budget they're given. So, as they negotiate between dreams and needs, children learn about making choices, planning and collaborating.
The workshop kicks off with a few questions: What do we really want? What do we need? What is the difference between dreams and needs? After sharing some ideas, the class divides into groups, where pupils can discuss, negotiate and decide what to buy for the party and what to do without, with the help of materials designed to stimulate their autonomy and critical thinking.
Each group is given a form to make notes about its choices, and, at the end of the activity, the groups compare the strategies they adopted and the challenges they faced.
As well as providing financial education content, the activity is designed to improve mathematical skills and transversal skills for communication, negotiation and teamwork.
The workshop is for both the first and second cycle of primary school, lasts an hour and is free of charge.
