'CashLab - Money as you've never seen it' returns this year. Created for secondary schools, the programme is the result of a partnership between MUDEM and the Museum of the Mint of Rome. Five purpose-designed appointments will take secondary-school students behind the scenes of coin and banknote production and disclose some background history.
On 18 and 25 February, 4 and 25 March and 1 April, classes will have the opportunity to visit the Museum of the Mint of Rome, taking part in a guided tour and hands-on workshops run by the staff from both museums.
During the visit, students will discover how coins and medals are made, become familiar with authentic samples and historical machinery, and learn about the history of the lira, from modern-day lira to the final issues before the euro. They will then explore these themes more deeply through two dedicated workshops.
One workshop will take students through the production process behind creating a coin and a medal, illustrating the techniques of the master engravers. They will then be able to try out direct cut engraving and wax modelling, handle minting dies and punches, and, finally, put everything into practice by 'coining' a clay medal.
A second workshop will introduce the principles of finance starting from a simple banknote, before embarking on an engaging journey around the world and challenging students to recognize the figures depicted on banknotes from different continents.
