From 5 to 8 June 2025, MUDEM will take part in the Archivissima 2025 Festival and the Night of the Archives with 'Le Mille Lire', its first virtual exhibition. The exhibition, created in partnership with Banca d'Italia's Historical Archive and other components of the Institution, serves as the pilot edition of a broader project that will, in time, be enriched with further public outreach initiatives.
MUDEM's new virtual space has been conceived to showcase - and to restore to the public - an important part of the artistic, numismatic and archival heritage of the Banca d'Italia, material that is ordinarily inaccessible, while fully embracing the guiding principles of the Archivissima Festival.
Notably, the wealth of information and narrative held in the Historical Archive has played a central role in shaping the entirely digital account of one hundred and forty years of our history, documented through archival records and period photographs.
Through the digitisation process undertaken for 'Le Mille Lire', MUDEM is paving the way for other central bank museums and is currently working on the preparation of new virtual exhibitions that will complement the visitor paths of the future Museum. Together with the Historical Archive, the Museum aims to 'preserve' the past contained in the digitised documents, making them accessible through languages and display methods projected towards the present and the future, and closer to younger audiences.
It is no coincidence that the theme chosen for the 2025 edition of Archivissima is 'On the Side of the Future.' The theme reflects the conviction that 'standing on the side of the future means believing in the possibility of change inherent in what has yet to come, fostering confidence, and trusting in the transformative power of creativity, of choice, and of alternatives that should never be taken for granted,' as highlighted by Manuela Iannetti, President of Archivissima. 'Above all, it means approaching age‑old questions with new perspectives.'
The event will conclude on Sunday, 8 June, and will be followed the next day by International Archives Day. All digital content presented by the archives participating in the Night of the Archives is available on the Archivissima website.
