On 22 June at 5.00 pm, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) will host the second event in 'The Adventure of Money - The everlasting exchange', a series exploring a subject that is both deeply familiar and largely invisible: trust in payments and the role of keeping records in economic relationships. The discussion will bring together Chiara Scotti, Deputy Governor of Banca d'Italia, and Francesco Sirano, Director of the MANN, in a conversation with Paola Ansuini, who will guide the audience through questions and reflections connecting past and present.
Beginning with the simple act of paying for a coffee using a smartphone, the event will reveal how every transaction relies on an underlying infrastructure - which used to involve physical media and social relationships and now uses technological systems, rules and institutions - that makes exchanges reliable and always recognizable. From the wax tablets of the Archive of the Sulpicii, which bear witness to the sophistication of the Roman world's economic system, to today's digital payments, the tools may have changed, but the fundamental need to build trust remains the same.
In this second instalment of the series curated by the Money Museum, the dialogue between archaeology and contemporary issues will invite audiences to see payments not as a technical subject just for specialists, but as an essential part of economic and social life: a continuous thread linking the practices of two thousand years ago with today's transformations and the future prospects of digital currency.
