Playing with numbers. Statistics as a sixth financial sense

National Archaeological Museum of Naples, Piazza Museo 19
28 September 2026
11:00 AM

On 28 September 2026, the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) will host the third and final appointment in the cycle called 'The adventure of money. The Infinite Exchange' created in collaboration with MUDEM ‒ the Money Museum.

The title of the meeting is 'Playing with numbers. Statistics as a sixth financial sense', and it is dedicated to one of the most important instruments for navigating the complexity of the present time: statistics. Although it is often seen as one of the most complex and boring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects, it is not just a set of mathematical techniques. It is a way to interpret the signs left by collective phenomena and is linked to financial literacy; it is increasingly important for us to be aware so that we can make informed choices.

Using accessible language and examples from daily life and some historical cases, the event introduces the public to statistical thinking as a tool for interpreting uncertainty, evaluating the information available and making economic decisions in a world that is changing rapidly.

The project concludes a programme dedicated to the topics of money and trust, and consists of three complementary meetings. The first appointment, 'The Gold of Naples. Devotion, money, and trust' looked at the meaning of gold, its symbolic value, its use as currency and its role in today's reserves. The second meeting, 'Trust and Record-Keeping: from the Archive of the Sulpicii to Digital Payments', instead explored the topic of recording transactions, showing how trust in economic systems has always been based on the ability to document and certify trade exchanges.

The Money Museum's travelling exhibition will continue in Genoa, Reggio Calabria and Bologna with 'The Adventure of Money. From gold to the digital euro.'
